Demystifying Essential Oils
Incorporating essential oils into your wellness routine may seem daunting or maybe even unnecessary, however this is not the case! Essential oils can be incredibly valuable and transformative for anyone looking to approach their health naturally. Personally, I use essential oils in my cleaning products, skin care routine, and even cook with them! Check out a few of my favorites:
Lemon
Right away lemon has a beautiful crisp, fresh scent. The vapors of the oil have been shown to combat depression by boosting the anti-stress hormone, norepinephrine. Additionally, when used topically, it has an astringent nature and promotes circulation, which can help tonify the skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Lemon also has antiseptic and antibacterial properties, which is why I use a few drops in my DIY cleaning products. It smells great and keeps the germs away.
Cinnamon
My all-time favorite spice and oil, cinnamon is an easy way to manage blood sugar, fight chest colds, and soothe muscle aches and pains. This is all thanks to the oil’s antispasmodic, analgesic, and antiseptic properties. My favorite way to enjoy cinnamon oil is to add a drop in my morning coffee or in a carrier oil to soothe muscles after a tough workout.
Clary Sage
Clary sage is the newest oil in my EO collection and I am currently hooked on its sweet herbal aroma. It has been long promoted for its ability to regulate hormones and fight off depression by lowering levels of the stress hormone cortisol and managing thyroid hormone levels.
Lavender
The king of essential oils, lavender oil is best known for its relaxing qualities however it has much more to offer. It is also immune boosting, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, antioxidant, and antiviral. In addition to spraying my pillowcase before bed, I will also take lavender oil in a capsule during times of high stress.
Peppermint
Invigorating, cooling, and revitalizing, peppermint oil is an easy way to freshen your breath and your home. Like most essential oils it is antimicrobial, antifungal, and contains antioxidant properties. It can reduce tension headaches, soothe nausea, improve concentration, and reduce surface pains on the skin. You can always find a bottle of this oil in my bag because of its many benefits. Additionally, I use it in my DIY mouthwash to keep my gums and teeth fresh all day.
There are obviously many more essential oils I could list; however, these have been my favorite so far.
